Paint Shop is the Tesla feature that restyles the 3D car on your touchscreen. It arrived with a holiday software update and lives in Toybox → Paint Shop. Nothing about your real paint changes; it is purely the car you see in the UI and in the Tesla app.
What you can change
- Color: switch the on-screen car to any factory paint.
- Wrap: apply a full-body design. Tesla ships a few, and you can load your own.
- Tint: darken the windows on the 3D car.
- Create your own: the entry point for custom wraps.
Which Teslas support custom wraps
Custom Paint Shop wraps work on Model 3 (2017–2023 and the 2024 Highland refresh), Model Y (2020–2024, the 2025 Juniper refresh and the six-seat Model Y L), Model S (2021+ and the 2025 Plaid), Model X (2021+) and Cybertruck, on recent software. Each of those has its own template, so a wrap is always made for one specific car.
How a custom wrap works: the UV template
The 3D car on your screen is made of panels, and each panel has a place on a flat map called a UV template. Tesla publishes these templates as 1024-pixel PNGs, one per model and trim. When you load a wrap, the car reads each pixel of your PNG and paints it onto the panel that owns that spot on the map.
That has two consequences people trip over:
- A photo pasted on the template doesn't look like the photo on the car. The side panels in most templates run top to bottom, with the front of the car pointing up, and they are split by door gaps. A picture has to be painted for that layout.
- Wraps are not interchangeable between cars. Model 3 and Model Y maps are different, and so are the old and new versions of each.
Making your own wrap
You have three routes:
- Paint the template yourself in an image editor. Download the official files from our Tesla wrap templates page, which also explains the layout of each one.
- Describe it to the Tesla wrap generator. It paints your idea onto the right template, checks it in 3D and exports a file that meets Paint Shop's rules.
- Start from a photo with photo to Tesla wrap: pets, logos, artwork and landscapes all work.
Loading it into the car
