Tesla Wrap Generator vs Tesla's official templates

Tesla publishes free Paint Shop templates on GitHub and leaves the design to you and an image editor. Tesla Wrap Generator starts from the same official templates and does the hard parts for you: the painting, the panel directions, the file rules and the 3D check.

The short answer

Tesla's official templates are the foundation of every Paint Shop wrap, and they are free. If you are comfortable in Photoshop or GIMP and know how each panel is laid out, DIY works. If you want an original wrap in a minute without learning the template, Tesla Wrap Generator paints it on the same official template, keeps every panel straight, fixes the file and shows it on a 3D car first.

Choose Tesla Wrap Generator if…

  • You have an idea but no time to learn an image editor.
  • You want stripes, numbers and characters to land straight without trial and error in the car.
  • You want to see the wrap on a 3D Tesla before you copy it to a USB drive.
  • You want the PNG checked against Tesla’s size, 1 MB and file name rules automatically.

Use the official templates by hand if…

  • You are a confident designer and want pixel-level control.
  • You want to spend nothing at all.
  • You are fine testing the result in the car and adjusting.

The DIY workflow vs the generator

Tesla's README lists five steps: download the template, edit it, save a PNG, transfer it, apply it. Here is who does what.

01

What Tesla's official repository gives you

The teslamotors/custom-wraps repository on GitHub has a template and example wraps for each of the 12 Paint Shop variants, plus the rules: a PNG between 512 and 1024 pixels, no larger than 1 MB, named with letters, numbers, underscores, dashes and spaces up to 30 characters. Up to 10 wraps load from the Tesla app (4.59 or later) and up to 10 from a USB drive in a folder called Wraps.

It does not include an editor, an AI, a 3D preview or a file checker. Those parts are up to you.

02

The three classic DIY mistakes

Sideways designs: the side panels are stacked nose-up, so artwork pasted in the natural orientation ends up lying on its side on the doors.

Dark seams: forgetting to delete the template’s outline layer leaves black lines along every panel edge on the car.

Files the car ignores: exports that are too big, the wrong size or named with emoji or accents simply do not show up in Paint Shop.

03

How the generator removes each one

Tesla Wrap Generator loads the same official template, adds a direction map for every panel to the AI’s instructions, replaces outlines with neighbouring colour, and exports at the template’s exact size under 1 MB with a safe name. You see the result on a 3D car before you download it.

04

Use both

Prefer to design by hand? Download every official template from the free Templates page, where a panel inspector shows which shape is which panel and which way is up. When you are done, drop your PNG into the free 3D Preview & PNG Fixer to check it on a 3D Tesla and fix it for Paint Shop.

04FAQ

Official templates vs the generator FAQ

Is there an official Tesla wrap generator?

No. Tesla publishes templates, examples and instructions on GitHub (teslamotors/custom-wraps) and the Paint Shop feature in the car, but no AI generator. Tesla Wrap Generator is an independent tool built on those official templates.

Does Tesla Wrap Generator use Tesla's official templates?

Yes. Every wrap is generated on the official template for the exact model and year you pick, so it lines up in Paint Shop.

Can I still edit the template myself?

Yes. All 12 templates are free on the Templates page, with a panel inspector that shows each panel and its direction. The free PNG Fixer checks your finished file.

Why does my DIY wrap not show up in the car?

Usually the file is over 1 MB, the wrong size or has special characters in its name, or the USB drive is formatted as NTFS. The free 3D Preview & PNG Fixer finds and fixes the file problems.

Can ChatGPT or another image AI make a Tesla wrap?

A general image AI can draw a pattern, but it does not know how Tesla’s templates are laid out, and the file still has to meet Paint Shop’s size, format and 1 MB rules. A dedicated generator like Tesla Wrap Generator handles the layout and the file for you.
