Tesla's Paint Shop lets you change how your car looks on the touchscreen and in the Tesla app. Colors and tints are built in, but the fun part is custom wraps: your own PNG, painted onto the 3D car. There are two ways to get one into the car, and both take about two minutes once the file is right.
Before you start: get the right file
Paint Shop is strict about files. A wrap has to be:
- a PNG
- 1024 × 1024 pixels (512 to 1024 works; Cybertruck uses 1024 × 768)
- under 1 MB
- named with only letters, numbers, spaces, dashes and underscores, 30 characters max
- made on the template for your exact car. A Model Y 2025 wrap will not line up on a 2022 Model Y.
If you made the wrap with the Tesla wrap generator, the download already meets all of this. If you made it yourself, run it through the free 3D preview and PNG fixer first.
Option 1: the Tesla app (app 4.59 or later)
- Update the Tesla app to version 4.59 or later.
- Open the app and go to Creations → Wrap → Upload.
- Pick the PNG from your phone.
- In the car, open Toybox → Paint Shop and switch to the Wraps tab. Your wrap appears there.
The app route is the quickest. You can keep up to 10 wraps from the app.
Option 2: a USB drive
- Format a USB drive as exFAT or FAT32 (MS-DOS FAT on a Mac). NTFS is not supported.
- Create a folder called Wraps at the top level of the drive.
- Copy your PNG files into that folder.
- Plug the drive into the car and open Toybox → Paint Shop → Wraps.
Up to 10 wraps load from USB, on top of the 10 from the app. Keep map and firmware update files off the drive you use for wraps; they can stop the car from reading it.
The wrap loads but looks wrong
- Panels are shifted or crooked. The wrap was made for a different template. Check your model and year: the 2024 Model 3 (Highland) and the 2025 Model Y (Juniper) each use new maps.
- Stripes run up and down instead of along the car. The design was painted without accounting for the template's orientation. In most Tesla templates the side panels run top to bottom with the front of the car pointing up.
- Dark lines along the panel gaps. The template's black outlines were left in the file. Remove them, or let the generator's export trim them for you.
The wrap doesn't show up at all
Work through these in order: file over 1 MB, wrong size, special characters in the name, USB formatted as NTFS, missing Wraps folder, or update files on the same drive. Our troubleshooting guide covers each one in detail.
